Cookbook Series

Through the Garden Window is a 4-book series, giving you a glimpse about growing your own food and what to do with it when you do. Written by Paula Baysinger Morhardt and illustrated by Peggy McDowell, each book contains twelve essays on gardening, harvesting, and cooking for a year, from planning in the winter to putting the garden back to bed in the fall. Through the Garden Window: Season of Harvest is complete with authentic recipes from the author’s grandmothers’ and great-grandmother’s recipe boxes.

“A perfect cookbook that preserves a bit of Americana! Passing down family recipes is so important. Who of us doesn't wish that we could replicate Grandma's holiday stuffing or Great Auntie's Dutch Apple pie? Through the Garden Window - Season of Harvest is a great trip down memory lane.”
Susan M. - Dublin, CA.

"This is a very original cookbook. It is part diary, part memory, and part recipe book. Occasionally, an author may include a sentence or two about where the recipe was found or how it was created, but Paula includes a short story about each of the recipes. This book is written the way home cooks talk about their recipes when they share them with a friend.

The original recipes don’t include baking directions – not even the shorthand kind like “bake in a medium oven until golden brown.” The women who wrote down these recipes just knew how long a cake would take in the oven, but Paula comes to the rescue with her own notes to help those who might be newer to home cooking.

The spiral binding makes it easy to open the book to the recipe you want and not lose your place while you’re mixing together the ingredients. The book contains just over a dozen recipes that will offer you something special for family time, the town social, or a child’s lunch box."
Tim L. - Minneapolis, MN

From Author Paula Morhardt:

I dedicated THROUGH THE GARDEN WINDOW - SEASON OF HARVEST to my grandmothers, great-grandmothers, and Mom and Mother-in-law. I also dedicated it to my great-great-grandmothers, two of whom I actually remember.

This picture is of my great-great-grandma Phoebe Kempert, holding me in 1958, when I was 3 months old. She died when I was 10, so I do remember her. My dad, his mom, and her dad complete the picture.

It is because of women like this that I am possible, that I am even here. If you have grandparents, please, take care of them, so many stories, so much family history, so much love in those arms.
